http://www.pentacongames.com/ "Indiana's longest running games
convention" with about 1000 attendees every fall. Fort Wayne, at the
convention center.
You who know Rick might know that his interest is mostly board games.
(As contrasted with to role-playing games, miniatures,
collectible/tradable card games, or computer games.) While the board
gamers seem to be a minority of possibly slightly older fogies, there
are some sessions at Pentacon for them....
BTW, attendance at Pentacon is larger than the attendance at the
NATIONAL Homebrewers' Conference. (But they only think they have as
much fun.)
Speaking of NHC, everyone is still waiting on pins and needles to hear
where the 2007 event will be held (mid-June, usually). It's taking
longer than anyone remembers to settle the question this time. Before
long the NHC should be returning to the Midwest (Chicago 2003 was the
last Midwest NHC). I went to the Las Vegas 2004 NHC and it was simply
the most fun a homebrewer can have. Ron Smith and Carl Nelson of FBI
went to the Orlando NHC this past June, and I suspect they're making
plans for going next year no matter where it is.
The NHC includes the 2nd round of the national AHA competition, but
there's way more than that. There are talks, demonstrations, book
signings, a hospitality room, a "club night," and usually a bus trip to
some educational event. Food and beer pairing, brewery tour,
something. All with a big group of other homebrewers, the world's
nicest people to be with. It's unbelievably fun.
