Here's Ron's latest about the coming Saturday event. There are some
interesting bits in this email, in cluding the part about the famous
John Blichmann, Randy Mosher, the event T-shirts, and the new club which
is still deciding on its name.
At this time (Monday morning, Philadelphia!) I'm thinking of running
down there early-ish in the morning on Saturday to help with set-up,
shop at GF and then be back before 4 pm.
Fellow FBI'ers,
The First Annual Indiana Homebrew Club Day / Brew-B-Q 2007 is coming up
this weekend (Saturday, 9th, 2:00, behind GF) and homebrewers from
around the state are excited and preparing to make the trip to Indy.
It is shaping up to be quite an incredible event, including probable
attendance by the famed equipment innovator, John Blichmann, and
renowned author Randy Mosher. World Class Beverages will have some
samples of craft beer, and Barley Island is also contributing to the
event. And let's not forget the featured smoked meats. All of this (as
well as my spending a couple days trying to track down and communicate
with everyone) has helped build the excitement and has motivated perhaps
35 or more people from at least 8 other clubs from all over the state to
attend. Everyone is really looking forward to meeting fellow brewers
from around the state in a fun, non-
competitive environment.
The FBI has gotten excited too and has really stepped up to be a great
host. Frank is going all out, taking his smoker to the event and cooking
for what could be as many as 80-90 people (though probably around 75).
He is also handling the food shopping duties, getting the wood, etc.
This is a big job, so we owe a big thanks to Frank.
Also, we owe a big thanks to all the people that have volunteered to
help on the day of the event with setup, hosting, and teardown. So far,
I have heard from Tom Wallbank, Steve Hugus, Brian Steuerwald, Jim Kirk,
Don St. Peters, Doug Osburn, Paul Henry, Carl Nelson, and Ron Fowler (a
homebrewer joining the club just to be a part of this event). Let me
know if I missed anyone.
This may sound like a lot of volunteers, but we could still use many
more. We have a huge setup planned, including at least 4 canopies, 10
tables, a large tarp, coolers, the club jockey box, etc. I have it all
sketched out, measured, and planned with Anita, but it is going to take
plenty of people to make it happen. Please let me know if you can help
(email or call my mobile - on Friday I will probably only be reached by
mobile since I am planning on taking the day off work to run errands and
prep for the event - call 201-6535). Setup will probably get started
around 9:00 am on Saturday morning and plan on teardown going to about
8:00 pm or later, so it will be a long day. Just give what time you can
(the more the better though).
Also, for all club members attending, here's what you can do:
--- Bring side dishes as you would for a regular Saturday meeting
(perhaps just bring a little more than usual).
--- Bring homebrew (and/or commercial beer) and similarly, try to bring
a little more than you would normally bring to a meeting.
--- Bring a partial (or full) keg if possible. Let's try to keep the 3
taps on the jockey box flowing throughout the event.
--- Bring containers and ice as needed for your beer and food (I have
some extra containers for cornies, so let me know if needed).
--- Bring any good beer-related stuff you can contribute to the door
prize drawings.
--- Bring lawn chairs.
--- Wear your FBI T-Shirt (preferably the Ash Grey version). Shirts can
be ordered at www.zazzle.com/ronzzz*. Always use this exact link when
ordering so that the club can earn the commission.
I have designed a T-Shirt for the event and it can be seen at the same
link as above, BUT PLEASE DON'T ORDER ONE YET. Feel free to check it
out, but the design isn't quite final yet since one new club is actually
making a final decision on their name later this week. I had to go ahead
and set it up and order a couple shirts for door prizes, but the design
will be final and they will be ready for ordering next Saturday. I will
have them on display and people can place an order at the event, then
pick them up at the Brewers Cup in a few weeks. Nobody needs them in
advance anyway, since they should be wearing their club shirt on the day
of the event. But if we can sell a bunch of the Brew-B-Q shirts and
combine the shipping charges, we can help pay for at least a portion of
the event. Bring some money to buy a shirt or two. They are pretty cool
looking, will make a great addition to your beer shirt wardrobe, and
will help us fund the event. Thanks!
I think that's all for now. Thanks to everyone for helping make this a
great event and helping to expand the Indiana brewing community. The
other clubs from around the state are already expressing their sincere
appreciation for us doing this, so it is being noticed and it is very
cool. Good job to all of us!
Let me know if anyone has any questions. Let me know if you can help
with the event. Let me know if you are bringing a keg, so we can plan
for it. I will probably be contributing one full keg and one partial
keg. That's a great start, but we need more if possible.
Let me know if I missed anything.
Let's have a huge turnout on Saturday! See you then.
Thanks,
Ron Smith
