Back when I was young, kits had not even been invented yet!  OK, it 
sounds dumb, but it's almost or mostly true.

I also was quite chagrined when it became apparent that this guy was not 
a brewer in the first place, just an electrical/computer engineer/tech 
person with an incredible drive toward the odd.

Kits are better than ever, but they need to stop insisting that it's OK 
to boil two gallons and then add cold water.  This almost always results 
in slightly inferior to terribly unsatisfactory end results.  Not 100%, 
though.  I have recently had a couple of beers that were amazingly good 
considering they were two-gallon boils.
