I'm going to dig a little more and bring some rhizomes to the meeting at 
Scott's.  If I don't forget or run out of time.

Who asked me if this was likely to slow the plant?  I forget.  But I 
think not, and I don't recall offhand where I saw it but it seems that 
it's accepted that hops plant health is improved if the root mass is not 
allowed to get completely matted with dead roots (and live ones).  Which 
is what mine have done after the eight or nine years they've been in.  
So this thinning should be good for them I think.
